In partnership with Trestlewood, Shou Sugi Ban is a cousin the the thermal modification process (see next), developed by the Japanese. It is the process of charring the outside of wood to help provide many of the similar qualities and characteristics of thermal modification. It can provide a unique and bold texture, accent the wood grain, and enhance any project. From timbers, siding, flooring, furniture, and pens, light to heavy burning, light to heavy brushing, and more styles, this is an option that you don't want to miss!
Additional benefits of this process include greater fire resistance, and exceptional water resistance! Sealants and oils are commonly used to retain the look over time, which eventually will weather out to a lighter more natural color. This weathering process can take decades to achieve, leaving a beautiful dark color that lasts a long time!
Thermally modified wood products utilize a specially designed heating process to rapidly heat up wood to high temperatures (185-215 degrees Celsius) and then cool back down, using steam to help control the temperature and custom moisture content in the wood. Through this process, many unfavorable elements in the wood are extracted and removed, sort of like a cleansing diet for the wood.
This provides the wood with significantly greater durability (rot, bug, water, warping other decay resistance), dimensional stability, weight reduction, color, and more. It's eco friendly, and uses no chemicals, just heat and water! It also increases the life expectancy of the typical product!
With these improvements to the wood, outdoor decks, furniture, siding, and more become more achievable without having to use chemicals and finishes repeatedly to sustain a product.
One of the challenges in reclaimed woodworking is getting the look you want! In order to achieve that aged grey look, it takes, well, ages! With our patent pending process in partnership with Trestlewood, we can accelerate mother nature's process without the fake stain or other distressing and weathering products!
Want a rocking chair out of reclaimed wood? Sure, we take grey wood, cut it up, and make it! This exposes the fresh lighter colored grain. Want it grey and rustic again authentically? We then utilize our process that can take years down to months, weeks, even days depending on the project!
